At the beginning of the night we started with introductions, pronouns and our question of the night was what the youth’s favourite frozen dessert is. There were some interesting choices from frozen grapes and starbursts to ice cubes and ice cream sandwiches. We then moved on to hot topics and dog tags. Our topic came from this past weekend, which was “Camp fYrefly.” Only two of the youth who were present at the meeting had been to camp and told us a little bit of their experience. It sounded like a really fun time and I hope that some of the other youth will be able to participate in it next year.
Our main event of the night was anonymous questions. For those who are unfamiliar with this, we do this quite regularly to check in with the youth and answer any pressing questions or give them advice. We use a website called “Poll Everywhere,” which lets people ask questions anonymously and then we address them as a group and give whoever that person may be advice. One question that we had addressed to us was how to get people to use your pronouns more. A youth was able to answer this question and share a resource called “Minus 18” (https://www.minus18.org.au/pronouns-app/). We were able to get through quite a few questions and give as much advice as possible.
At the end of the night, we closed the meeting with some updates from the youth. Overall, it was a great night full of interesting conversation.
I’ll see everyone again on the 15th!
